Week 6 - Chinese New Year

So much potential, sadly dampened by the poor weather. However still a great atmosphere despite the rain.

Once again I found myself heading out early on a Sunday morning, this week to catch the Chinese New Year celebrations in Chinatown to say goodbye to the year of the dragon and hello to the year of the snake.

The day started with a parade from Trafalgar Square, around Leicester Square and through Chinatown some of the highlights of which can be seen below:

Following on from the parade there was the 'dotting of the eye' ceremony to officially welcome in the new year followed by firecrackers and performances on stage, which I was really looking forward to, however due to the weather the majority of people there had their umbrellas up which made seeing anything happening on stage nigh on impossible beyond three rows back.

However I did get to try a Pork Bun and have 'my name written in Chinese', both experiences in themselves:

To ensure the rest of the day wasn't wasted I took a quick tour of St Martin's in the Fields church followed by a look in the National Portrait Gallery.

The day apparently ended with fireworks which I missed, but I did manage to catch the Six Nations - England vs. Ireland and also found what might be the coolest jazz bar in London, a place called Dee Dee's in Tulse Hill.
